How to Use a Manual Gearbox: A Step-by-Step Guide

Understanding the main controls

• Clutch (left pedal): Press down to disconnect the engine from the wheels; release slowly to reconnect. The "biting point" is where the car just starts to move.
• Brake (middle pedal): Slows the car. In a manual car, press the clutch down before the car almost stops, to avoid stalling.
• Accelerator (right pedal): Adds power. Gentle pressure is best when moving off.
• Gear lever: Lower gears give more power at low speed; higher gears are quieter and more efficient for cruising.
• Handbrake: Holds the car still, and is especially useful on hills while you find the bite point.

Moving off without stress

1. Prepare: Handbrake on, gear in neutral, engine running, left foot on the clutch.
2. Select first gear: Press the clutch fully down and select first.
3. Set the gas: Add a small amount of accelerator to give the engine a little power.
4. Find the bite point: Raise the clutch slowly until you feel the car lift slightly. Hold steady.

6. Build speed: Once rolling, clutch down, select second gear, then ease the clutch back up gently.
